Alvin Adelman
Mr. Adelman has been advising and representing employers on a wide range of labor and employment matters since 1974. His clients include utilities, banks, educational institutions, cultural institutions, religious institutions, health care institutions and employers of various sizes.
Mr. Adelman has also been advising and representing winners of large lotteries since 2005. His special experience, coupled with the various resources of the firm, has enabled individuals who suddenly acquire wealth to successfully navigate the myriad issues with which they must deal.
Mr. Adelman regularly advises and represents clients with respect to all aspects of labor and employment law and related litigation.
Mr. Adelman has extensive experience in all aspects of “traditional” labor law, including union avoidance, representation elections and proceedings, collective bargaining, preparation of collective bargaining and related agreements, decertification proceedings, arbitrations, mediations and unfair labor practice charges.
Mr. Adelman has practiced before Federal and State courts, National Labor Relations Board, the New York State Division and local Commissions on Human Rights, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and arbitrators selected independently and by the American Arbitration Association.
Mr. Adelman is responsible for ensuring client compliance with (among others) the National Labor Relations Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Older Workers Benefit Protection Act, Occupational Safety and Health Act, New York’s Workers’ Compensation Law, and Federal, New York State, and local Human Rights laws.
Mr. Adelman is responsible for drafting and reviewing employment policy and procedures manuals to ensure they meet an employer’s needs and comply with all relevant laws.
He regularly prepares employment contracts and severance agreements and plans for reductions in force.
Past Experience
Mr. Adelman has spent his entire career as a lawyer at Cullen and Dykman. He started as an associate attorney in 1974, became a partner in 1984, and became Of Counsel to the firm in 2005. For a period of time he was head of the firm’s Labor and Employment department. Prior to joining the firm, he worked as a chemical engineer in the design and construction of chemical and cryogenic plants.
